Easter Egg bonanza
Retail outlets in South Wigston were bowled over by the massive response to their invitation to local junior school students to join in and design an Easter egg.
Chairman of the South Wigston Association of Traders, Rob Elliott, issued the challenge to both local primary schools, Parkland and Fairfield. What he didn’t realise was that they’d receive over 550 entries to judge!
Three age groups, up to 6, 8 and 10 years of age, set about designing an Easter egg using any forms available – pencil, crayon, water paints… and a host more.
“The standard of the entries was remarkable” said Rob, “The only difficulty was selecting the 12 finalists for each age group”.
All 36 finalists were then submitted to a judging panel led by Councillor Richard Morris, the council’s Economic Development Officer Rebecca Miles and Ruth Elliott (S Wigston Assoc’n of Traders).
The standard was so good and the competition so tight that they eventually agreed on 2 joint winners for the Up to 6 category.
Winners were Isabelle and Ria (Up to 6) from Parklands, Marie (Up to 8) from Fairfield and Courtney (Up to 10) again from Parkland. Each have already received an Easter Egg from the Association..
“One of the aims of the Association is to offer ways that the local traders can contribute back into the community and this has proven to be a great success. So much that we’re now looking into other ideas. Watch this space.” said Rob.
Many of the local shops then displayed just a random selection of the entries, including the winners and finalists.
